Why Choose a Salt Lick Safari Lodge Safari?

Salt Lick Safari Lodge stands out as one of Kenya’s most photographed safari lodges—and for good reason. Its elevated, stilted design overlooks a busy waterhole, creating a natural theatre where wildlife gathers throughout the day and night.

This safari is perfect for:

Why This Salt Lick Safari Stands Out

The Salt Lick Safari Lodge 2-night safari package is one of Kenya’s most distinctive short wildlife experiences, combining accessibility, comfort, and exceptional game viewing in a private conservancy setting. Unlike longer itineraries that require extensive road travel and multiple park changes, this safari delivers a complete and immersive wildlife journey in just three days.

What makes this experience truly special is the balance between luxury accommodation, seamless transport, and close-up wildlife encounters. From the moment you board the SGR train in Nairobi or Mombasa to the time you arrive at the elevated stilted lodge in Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, the journey is designed to feel effortless, scenic, and deeply connected to nature.

Salt Lick Safari Lodge is not just a place to stay—it is an experience in itself. Built above a busy wildlife waterhole, the lodge offers uninterrupted views of animals moving freely below you throughout the day and night. Elephants, buffalo, zebras, giraffes, and antelope regularly gather within meters of the property, creating one of the most unique safari viewing experiences in Africa.

This is why the Salt Lick safari stands out: it delivers high-impact wildlife experiences in a short time frame without compromising comfort or authenticity.

Key Advantages of the Salt Lick Safari Lodge Experience

1. Unique Lodge Experience in the Wild

Salt Lick Safari Lodge is one of Africa’s most iconic safari lodges due to its distinctive architectural design. The entire property is elevated on stilts and connected by suspended walkways, creating a “floating in the wilderness” feeling.

From your room, restaurant, or viewing deck, you can observe wildlife moving freely below. Unlike traditional lodges where game drives are required to see animals, here the safari comes directly to you.

Key highlights include:

  • Elevated panoramic rooms overlooking a busy waterhole
  • Constant wildlife activity visible from the lodge
  • Night-time viewing of animals under floodlights
  • A true “live safari” experience without leaving the lodge

This creates an unmatched sense of immersion where guests feel fully connected to the natural environment.

2. Private Conservancy Advantage

The lodge is located within the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, a privately managed conservancy adjacent to Tsavo West National Park. This gives it a major advantage over public parks.

Unlike busier safari destinations, Taita Hills offers:

  • Fewer safari vehicles on game drives
  • Exclusive and quiet wildlife viewing
  • Controlled access ensuring a peaceful environment
  • Higher chances of uninterrupted photography

This exclusivity allows for a more relaxed and personal safari experience, where guests can enjoy wildlife without the congestion often found in larger national parks.

3. Easy and Scenic Train Access (SGR)

One of the most appealing features of this package is the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) connection between Nairobi or Mombasa and Voi Station.

Instead of long and tiring road journeys, guests enjoy:

  • Comfortable first-class train travel
  • Scenic views of Kenya’s countryside and wildlife corridors
  • A smooth, predictable travel schedule
  • Quick transfer from Voi directly into the sanctuary

This makes Salt Lick Safari Lodge one of the most accessible safari destinations in Kenya, especially for short stays or weekend getaways.

The journey itself becomes part of the safari experience, offering a relaxed transition from city or coast into the wilderness.

4. Excellent Wildlife Viewing Opportunities

Despite being a compact conservancy, Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary offers outstanding wildlife diversity and density.

Guests can expect sightings of:

  • Elephants, often gathering at the lodge waterhole
  • Lions and leopards in the surrounding hills
  • Buffalo and zebra herds moving across open plains
  • Giraffes browsing on acacia trees
  • Antelope species such as impala, kudu, and waterbuck
  • Rich birdlife including raptors, hornbills, and kingfishers

The combination of game drives and lodge-based viewing ensures wildlife encounters throughout the day—not just during scheduled safari outings.

Early mornings and late afternoons are particularly rewarding, as predators and herbivores become more active in cooler temperatures.

5. All-Inclusive Safari Convenience

This Salt Lick safari package is designed to be completely hassle-free. Once booked, nearly every aspect of your journey is taken care of.

The package typically includes:

  • Accommodation at Salt Lick Safari Lodge
  • All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
  • SGR train tickets (return)
  • Transfers from Voi Station to the lodge
  • Game drives within the sanctuary
  • Entry fees and conservation charges
  • Guided cultural and heritage visits

This means travelers can focus entirely on the experience without worrying about logistics, payments, or planning once on the ground.

It is especially ideal for first-time safari travelers or those seeking a short, well-organized escape.

6. Perfect for Short Getaways and Extensions

One of the biggest strengths of this safari is its flexibility. At just two nights, it fits perfectly into:

  • Weekend breaks from Nairobi or Mombasa
  • Honeymoon add-ons after a beach holiday
  • Short family holidays during school breaks
  • Business travelers seeking a quick wildlife escape
  • Extensions to longer Kenya safari circuits

It also works exceptionally well as part of a bush-and-beach itinerary, combining safari adventure with coastal relaxation in Diani, Mombasa, or Watamu.

Best Time to Visit Salt Lick Safari Lodge

This is the peak safari season in Kenya.

January to March

A warm and dry period with excellent safari conditions.

  • Good wildlife concentration around water sources
  • Fewer tourists compared to peak months
  • Clear visibility for photography
  • Comfortable weather conditions

This is a great time for travelers seeking quieter safari experiences.

April to May & November (Green Seasons)

These are Kenya’s short and long rainy seasons.

  • Lush green landscapes ideal for photography
  • Fewer tourists and more peaceful lodges
  • Occasional rain showers
  • Excellent birdwatching opportunities

Although wildlife disperses slightly, the scenery becomes especially beautiful and vibrant.

A classic overland safari option.

Arrive at the lodge in time for lunch, where you can enjoy your first views of the famous waterhole—often already alive with elephants, buffalo, and antelope.

Day 2: Sunrise Safari, Sanctuary Exploration & Heritage Experience

  • Lions returning from a night of hunting
  • Elephants moving in herds across the plains
  • Birdlife in full activity, from raptors to colorful rollers
  • Antelope grazing in the soft morning light

This is also the best time for photography, with soft lighting and dramatic scenery.

  • The role of Taita Taveta in World War I

Overnight: Salt Lick Safari Lodge

Day 3: Morning Views & Departure

Wake up to your final morning in the wild, with the opportunity to enjoy a relaxed breakfast overlooking the waterhole. Early risers may catch elephants, buffalo, or antelope arriving for their morning drink—an ideal way to end your safari.

After breakfast, check out and begin your transfer back to Voi Train Station. The drive once again offers chances for wildlife sightings, making every moment count until the very end.

Board your return SGR train to Nairobi or Mombasa, enjoying a comfortable journey back while reflecting on the highlights of your safari:

  • Close-up wildlife encounters

The Holiday Dealers are the best! Use their services if you’re thinking to plan a trip to Kenya. I started planning this trip four months from when I wanted to visit with my family (2 young kids). David and his team were instantly responsive providing excellent recommendations on where to stay and options for what to do. The Holiday Dealers showed great flexibility when our flights altered from the original plans and when we wanted to make last-minute adjustments to our trip for the final day.

Every driver we had in Nairobi and the Maasai Mara was on time and considerate. Notably, I’m so thankful for going with The Holiday Dealer’s recommendation to use one of their Maasai game drivers, Stanley. Stanley was fantastic and great with our kids. He showed us so much and we learned a lot about the animals, land, and the Maasai tribe.

The Holiday Dealers attention to detail is top-notch. We always felt supported and they went above and beyond to ensure this happened.

The Holiday Dealers have provided me with consistently excellent service for many years. What began as a random enquiry on their website was met with a warm, responsive reply, and that level of care has never changed. David is outstanding — incredibly responsive, knowledgeable, and understands my travel preferences even better than I do! His suggestions always turn out to be spot on. The service is genuinely personalised — so personalised that sometimes I feel like I am their only client :) Everything is handled seamlessly from start to finish, whether it’s a solo trip or a larger family holiday. Their website is easy to use when exploring ideas. I would wholeheartedly recommend The Holiday Dealers.

We had the best experience. Everything was really great. We booked a tour from Nairobi to lake Nakuru and then to Masaai Mara and back to Nairobi. Our guide and driver Brian was very well educated and told us a lot about the animals and plants we were able to spot. He was also a very experienced driver. In the Mara we saw a lot of cars got stuck in the mudd because of the rain the day before. The camps the holiday dealers recommended us were great. The food was very delicious, the staff was very polite and the rooms were nice. We spotted a lot of different animals and of course the big five. Thanks to the Team of The holiday dealers – the whole trip was a unforgettable journey for our whole family.

It is now over a decade since i started using The Holiday Dealers to plan my tours and travels. Not a single day have they disaspointed me. They have remained consistent and professional in their service delivery. Over the years, they have personaized my trips, to suit my needs and expectations of a perfect vacation. From sourcing for family based hotels like Voyager and Baobab resorts to romantic getaways like Finch Hattons Mahali Mzuri and Bluff lodges etc, the Holiday Dealers have no doubt mastered their craft. They will take you from the bush to the beach without breaking a sweat.

Last festive season, Holiday Dealers successfuly planned my trip to Nothern and Central parts of Kenya. We were assigned a highly qualified, professional and well informed tour guide and driver who gave us limitless guided game drives of the breathtaking landscapes of Samburu. In particular we visited the Buffalo Springs National Reserve and Shaba Game Reserve. While there watch out for the Duom palm, grevy’s Zebra and the Orynx.
We wound up our trip at the luxurious Fairmont Mt. Kenya Safari club. In the morning, we would wake up to perfect views of amazing sunrise from the top of Mt. Kenya. The location of the club is just perfect. We were also lucky to see the endangered mountain bongo, some Llamas and other animals at the animal orphanage.

Trust Holiday Dealers to fulfill your Holiday Dreams.

Holiday dealers facilitated our 4 days 3 nights safari tour at samburu. It was a last minute booking because the first travel agency that I contacted did not return my msgs anymore. Holiday dealers was professional in every way, responsive and patient with regards to my preference. They exceeded my expectation of Kenya, every experience is 10 stars or more for us. From the camp, game rides, food and staff. Everything is simply magnificent. Special mention to Kathure-travel agent and James-tour guide… it was short but the sweetest of all vacations that I’ve ever had. Can’t wait for another safari experience.

My wife and I stayed at the Voyager resort on an all inclusive booking. We were extremely happy with Sheila from the Holiday Dealers who made sure all reservations were in order and also checked in with us to see if all was okay. The resort was fantastic and we had an amazing time. Everything from the food, ambience, entertainment and staff were awesome! I highly recommend The Holiday Dealers and Voyager Resort.
